Towards Expo 2030 Riyadh

With the curtain just drawn on Expo 2025 Osaka (13 Apr – 13 Oct 2025), the global community now turns its attention to the next major world‐expo: Expo 2030 Riyadh, scheduled from 1 October 2030 to 31 March 2031 in Saudi Arabia’s capital. This event offers much more than a temporary showcase—it marks a strategic milestone in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 transformation and its ambitions on the world stage.

Saudi Arabia’s pavilion in Osaka: a springboard

At Osaka, Saudi Arabia made a striking statement. Hosting one of the largest national pavilions (designed by Foster + Partners) on the Yumeshima waterfront, the Kingdom’s structure welcomed more than one million visitors within its first 70 days. The pavilion featured 700 + events, immersive galleries and cultural performances that blended heritage and innovation. At the closing ceremony, Ambassador Dr Ghazi Binzagr emphasised that the pavilion invited the world to “experience the Kingdom up close”, and looked ahead to Expo 2030 in Riyadh with anticipation.

This success in Osaka sets the tone: the pavilion served as both a global engagement platform and a test‐bed for what Saudi Arabia intends to deliver on home soil in 2030.

Vision 2030 meets Mega-Expo

Expo 2030 Riyadh isn’t merely about hosting an impressive event—it is an integrated piece in the Kingdom’s strategy to diversify its economy, boost culture and tourism, and foster global partnerships. The official theme is still evolving, though multiple sources frame it around “Foresight for Tomorrow” or “The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow”.

The masterplan details add further scale: a site near Wadi Al Sulai covering approx. 6 million m², of which some 3.3 million m² are dedicated to experiential zones, with space for national pavilions, showcasing innovation, sustainability and cultural exchange. An estimated 17 million visitors and up to 42 million visits are projected.

What to look out for

  • Sustainability and immersive design: Building on the sustainable architecture of the Saudi pavilion at Osaka, Riyadh’s expo site emphasizes walkability, modular pavilions, high‐tech engagement and the merging of heritage with future technologies.
  • Global participation: More than 195 countries and 29 international organisations are expected to participate, setting the stage for broad collaboration.
  • Legacy beyond the six months: The expo is designed not to vanish when it closes, but to leave a living infrastructure and an innovation hub aligned with national priorities in culture, tourism and urban development.
  • Cultural diplomacy and investment magnet: The Osaka pavilion showcased Saudi Arabia’s cultural sector, technological ambitions and hospitality credentials—signals to investors, entrepreneurs and global audiences alike.

Why it matters for the future

For planners, developers and global investors, Expo 2030 Riyadh represents one of the decade’s most important platforms. It is not just about visitor numbers or temporary installations—it is a powerful funnel for transformation: aligning Saudi Arabia’s economic roadmap with global flows of talent, culture and capital. The link between its latest pavilion success in Osaka and its ambitious home‐event in 2030 is direct.

As the countdown begins, stakeholders worldwide have an opportunity to engage early: through pavilion planning, innovation partnerships, infrastructure projects and cultural programming. In doing so, they become part of a wider narrative—one in which Saudi Arabia is not just hosting an exhibition, but aiming to shape the future of urban experience, global collaboration and cultural exchange.
