When is an oil rig not an oil rig?

… When it becomes a 300,000 sq m offshore fun and entertainment centre. On 17 January 2024, the full masterplan was revealed for THE RIG. project (yes, there’s a full-stop after RIG!) – planned to be built in the Arabian Gulf.

In a bold move that merges the thrill of extreme sports with the innovative use of maritime engineering, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) originally unveiled THE RIG. in 2021, the visionary project set to be the world’s premier adventure tourism destination atop an offshore platform. Inspired by the structural design of oil rigs, this ambitious initiative is a testament to the Kingdom’s forward-thinking approach to diversifying its tourism and entertainment offerings.

And while the master plan has been revealed, giving some exciting details about the project, no time-line has been announced, except for the fact that 900,000 visitors are expected to visit in 2032, leading us to believe this may be the date that the project will be fully completed.

The development of THE RIG. is spearheaded by the Oil Park Development Company (OPDC). According to the PIF, this pioneering project aims to “cement Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a hub of unique tourist attractions, while simultaneously creating valuable job opportunities and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents”.

When it comes to environmental stewardship, the project is being crafted in accordance with the most stringent international standards, prioritising environmental protection, community empowerment, eco-friendly experiences, and responsible operational practices.

RIG

Spanning an impressive expanse of over 300,000 square metres and situated 40 km off the coast near Juraid Island and the Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf, THE RIG. is set to offer an array of attractions. The project will boast three hotels offering a total of 800 rooms, 11 gourmet restaurants, a selection of retail outlets, and a plethora of adrenaline-inducing activities both above and below the water. Access to this offshore haven will be facilitated through two onshore terminals located in Dammam City and Jubail Industrial City, with visitors able to choose from a variety of transport options including fast ferries, helicopters, and seaplanes. Peak visitor numbers are estimated to be up to 10,000 per day during the peak season. Domestic and regional visitors will make up 70% of the footfall, with 30% of visitors expected to come from international markets. In all, the RIG. will target extreme sports and adventure lovers, those interested in oil and gas heritage, yachting and cruise line tourists, families, and relaxation seekers.

The vision behind THE RIG. is clear and compelling: to establish a global benchmark for providing unparalleled hospitality and adventure experiences on sustainably developed offshore platforms. This mission is underpinned by the goal of building sustainable tourist destinations that blend warm hospitality with the thrill of extreme adventures, offering guests from around the globe an experience unlike any other.

As THE RIG. takes shape, it is expected to foster collaboration across public and private sectors both within the Kingdom and internationally, further enhancing Saudi Arabia’s standing as a leading tourist destination known for its distinctive offerings. The project promises not only to redefine adventure tourism but also to contribute significantly to the socio-economic fabric of the Eastern Province, marking a new chapter in the Kingdom’s ambitious tourism and entertainment journey.
