Jean-Jacques Morin, Deputy CEO of Accor Group, was a “star” attendee at the recent Future Hospitality Summit in Riyadh. The event not only showcased the latest trends and innovations in hospitality but also highlighted the growing significance of Saudi Arabia in the global hospitality landscape. Alongside this significant summit, Morin was involved in the inauguration of the new Novotel Riyadh Al Sahafa, marking another milestone in Accor’s expansion in the region.
Accor, under Morin’s joint leadership, has demonstrated a robust commitment to the Saudi market, driven by the kingdom’s dynamic economy and youthful demographics.
SAFE: Jean-Jacques, you’re here in Riyadh for two significant events: the Future Hospitality Summit and the opening of the new Novotel Riyadh Al Sahafa. Could you share your vision for Saudi Arabia with us?
Jean-Jacques Morin: Saudi Arabia is a place where we are keen to invest heavily. The country has a solid economy and a youthful population—60% are below the age of 30. Moreover, it has a clear strategic direction with the Vision 2030. This kind of planning is rare and crucial for business success. Accor has a longstanding 30-year history in Saudi Arabia, giving us a deep understanding of how to effectively do business here. There’s both a great country and a great plan here, and we are committed to making our vision happen.

Considering the close historical ties between France and Saudi Arabia, does this relationship help in your operations?
Absolutely. The strong exchanges between the countries make it easier to connect the dots and build bridges. It’s always beneficial.
AlUla has a great deal of influence from France, and has also been a focal point of your operations. What are your thoughts on the developments there?
AlUla is a prime example of what draws people to this part of the world. It’s not just the unique heritage or the historical monuments but also the pristine beaches of the Red Sea. These are still largely undiscovered treasures that offer a unique blend of geography and history which will attract more visitors over time.
There’s a lot of excitement about the development along the Red Sea coast. Can you elaborate on that?
We discussed the development of pristine properties in untouched areas along the coast. Our goal is to ensure these places remain unspoiled by tourism. We are committed to sustainable development and making sure that these unique spots are preserved correctly.
Accor has a strong presence in the holy cities. Can you talk about the significance of this for your company?
We’re the leading player in the holy cities with 12,000 rooms. The demand there is immense and growing, particularly since the visa processes have been streamlined, resulting in a 30% increase in visitors compared to 2019. However, the current supply still limits the potential. We see a significant opportunity to cater to the increasing number of pilgrims and visitors to these unique places.
How do you personally feel about Saudi Arabia when you visit?
It’s exhilarating. Being surrounded by so much youth and energy is like taking a bath in vitality. The country is like a young adult growing rapidly and confidently, and you can really feel that energy and potential here.
Through Jean-Jacques Morin’s insights, it’s clear that Accor sees significant growth potential in Saudi Arabia, underpinned by strategic planning and a rich cultural heritage. The company’s commitment to sustainable development and understanding of the local market positions it well to capitalise on the expanding opportunities in the region.
