The Culinary Arts Commission has held a virtual meeting titled “Registration in the Delice Network,” introducing participants to this prestigious global platform. The session outlined the expected goals and benefits of joining the Delice Network, aiming to enhance international recognition of Saudi culinary culture with a particular focus on Sakakah City, poised to become the first Arab city nominated to join.
The Delice Network, comprising over 25 cities recognised as distinguished culinary destinations, offers a collaborative platform for member cities to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and forge partnerships. This network facilitates cooperative projects and promotes culinary arts, helping to position member cities as top culinary destinations.
This initiative underscores the growing importance of culinary tourism worldwide, a sector that has seen significant growth as travelers increasingly seek authentic and diverse gastronomic experiences. Despite its rich and diverse flavors, Saudi cuisine remains relatively unknown on the global stage. The Culinary Arts Commission is committed to changing this through strategic initiatives and global partnerships.
Among its recent achievements, the commission has successfully propelled Asir to receive the Region of Gastronomy Award in 2024, organized Buraydah’s Creative Exhibition at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and facilitated the inclusion of Taif and Al-Ahsa as UNESCO Creative Cities.
By joining the Delice Network, the Culinary Arts Commission aims to celebrate and highlight Saudi Arabia’s culinary heritage on the international stage, fostering greater appreciation and understanding of its unique and rich food culture.
Discovering the richness of Saudi cuisine
Saudi cuisine, with its rich history and vibrant flavors, remains one of the world’s best-kept culinary secrets. As the global interest in culinary tourism continues to rise, there has never been a better time for food enthusiasts to discover the diverse and delicious offerings of Saudi Arabia.
Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Saudi cuisine is a harmonious blend of Middle Eastern, Indian, Persian, and African influences, reflecting the Kingdom’s historical position as a crossroads of trade and culture. Each region in Saudi Arabia boasts its own unique dishes and flavors, from the aromatic spices of the Hijaz region to the hearty, meat-based dishes of Najd.
Staples like Kabsa, a fragrant rice dish often cooked with lamb or chicken, and Jareesh, a cracked wheat dish with meat and vegetables, showcase the depth and complexity of Saudi flavors. The use of spices such as cardamom, cumin, and saffron, along with local ingredients like dates and pomegranates, create dishes that are both comforting and exotic.
Moreover, the Saudi dining experience is deeply tied to the country’s culture of hospitality. Meals are often communal, emphasizing the importance of sharing and togetherness. Traditional feasts are an opportunity to not only savor delicious food but also to engage in cultural exchange and build connections.
Despite its rich culinary heritage, Saudi cuisine is still relatively unknown outside the region. However, initiatives like the Culinary Arts Commission’s efforts to join the Delice Network and the promotion of Saudi culinary arts on international platforms are helping to change this. By bringing Saudi dishes to the global stage, these initiatives invite people from around the world to experience the flavors and traditions of Saudi Arabia.
As the world becomes more interconnected, the opportunity to explore and appreciate diverse cuisines grows. Saudi cuisine offers a unique and delightful experience that food lovers everywhere should not miss. Whether through traditional recipes or modern interpretations, discovering Saudi food is a journey of taste and culture that promises to enrich the global culinary landscape.
