King Abdulaziz Public Library: leading Saudi Arabia’s cultural tourism revolution

The King Abdulaziz Public Library (KAPL) has launched a groundbreaking cultural initiative to position Saudi Arabia as a premier global destination for cultural tourism. This ambitious project aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives by strengthening national identity, fostering cultural exchange, and promoting sustainable development.

A mission to promote Saudi heritage and tourism

The initiative aims to attract international visitors to KAPL’s diverse branches, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage, folk arts, and traditions. The library seeks to deepen citizens’ connection to their cultural roots while contributing to economic diversification. By blending historical preservation with modern innovation, KAPL is creating a platform that harmoniously represents Saudi Arabia’s authenticity and forward-thinking ethos.

Faisal bin Abdulrahman bin Muammar, General Supervisor of KAPL, highlighted the library’s dedication to advancing the Kingdom’s cultural and tourism objectives. “This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s unique blend of authenticity and modernity, showcasing its cultural and civilisational heritage while fostering coexistence and acceptance of diverse global cultures,” he remarked.

A rich legacy, pioneering cultural engagement

Established in 1985 in Riyadh, the King Abdulaziz Public Library is one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent cultural institutions. Its main branch is located in the Al-Murabba district of Riyadh, adjacent to the historic Murabba Palace, once a royal residence of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. KAPL also operates branches dedicated to children’s literature and women’s studies, ensuring accessibility to knowledge for all segments of society.

The library is renowned for its extensive collections, including historical manuscripts, rare documents, global historical images, artistic icons, and miniatures representing a range of historical and artistic eras. Its role extends beyond that of a traditional library, acting as a dynamic cultural hub that hosts events, exhibitions, and initiatives promoting Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage.

The King Abdulaziz Public Library’s influence in cultural tourism dates back to the 1990s, when it hosted landmark events such as the Al-Andalus Symposium, the Islam and Dialogue of Civilisations Symposium, and the Arab Culture Symposium. These events attracted participants from around the globe, establishing the library as a key player in fostering cross-cultural understanding.

The library’s initiatives also include the prestigious King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation, which encourages global collaboration through the translation of significant works, and the Unified Arab Index Project, which consolidates Arab bibliographic records to make research more accessible.

International reach and collaboration

KAPL’s international presence is perhaps best exemplified by its branch at Peking University in China. This library serves as a cultural bridge between Arab-Islamic and Chinese civilisations, fostering dialogue and cooperation. This partnership reflects KAPL’s commitment to expanding Saudi cultural tourism on a global scale.

The King Abdulaziz Public Library has also worked with international organisations and cultural institutions to showcase Saudi history and traditions abroad. Its travelling exhibitions of Islamic manuscripts and Arab art have introduced global audiences to the richness of Saudi cultural heritage.

The library’s latest initiative complements Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the Kingdom’s economy and transform it into a global cultural and tourism hub. According to the International Monetary Fund, Saudi Arabia surpassed its 2030 target of attracting 100 million visitors annually by 2023, seven years ahead of schedule. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of initiatives like KAPL’s in driving tourism and enriching cultural experiences.

Saudi Arabia’s Quality of Life Programme, launched in 2018, further reinforces the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing cultural offerings. By promoting initiatives in culture, entertainment, sports, and tourism, the programme has helped transform Saudi Arabia into a destination celebrated for its vibrant cultural life.

Preserving heritage and empowering future generations

Through its work, KAPL not only preserves Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage but also provides a platform for cultural exchange and modern innovation. By attracting international visitors, the library supports economic diversification and contributes to a global appreciation of Saudi culture.
