Abha International Airport – Merging Tradition with Modernity

The newly announced master plan for the Abha International Airport signifies a pivotal step for the Kingdom’s infrastructure. Located in the Asir region, the airport aims to blend regional architectural cues with modern amenities.

Asir is a province situated in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, named after the Asir tribe. Geographically, Asir stands out due to its high plateau which receives more rainfall than most parts of Saudi Arabia. This region boasts the country’s highest peaks, with Jabal Sawda near Abha reaching almost 3,000 metres. Due to its unique climate, Asir showcases a richer natural vegetation compared to other parts of Saudi Arabia, with even some areas featuring dense coniferous forests.

The Asir National Park, established in 1981, spans from the Red Sea coast to the Asir escarpment, further emphasizing the region’s ecological significance.

The terminal area is set to expand to 65,000 sq m by 2028, up from the current 10,500 sq m. This expansion will introduce passenger boarding bridges, self-service facilities, and ample parking.

The design will echo the Asir region’s distinct architectural style while capturing Saudi culture. With a projected capacity to serve over 13 million passengers annually—up from its present 1.5 million—the airport will handle over 90,000 flights yearly, a significant increase from today’s 30,000 flights. The facility will also feature 20 gates and 41 check-in counters, including 7 self-service options.

Beyond infrastructure, the airport’s development seeks to elevate the Asir region’s tourism appeal. It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, targeting connectivity to 250 destinations and accommodating 330 million passengers annually.

Minister of Transport and Logistics and Chairman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser extended his gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on the occasion of the Crown Prince’s launch of the master plan for the new Airport.

Al-Jasser also expressed appreciation for Asir Governor Prince Turki bin Talal for his support and interest in projects related to the transport and logistics in the region.

“The announcement of HRH the Crown Prince to launch the master plan is an extension of his interest and great support to develop the aviation sector, in accordance with the aviation strategy that included a major package of strategic projects launched by HRH the Crown Prince to enhance infrastructure in the aviation sector, improve the Kingdom’s position as an international aviation hub, and a global logistics hub, until reaching the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy,” the minister said.
