Chedi Hegra opens for business

In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and General Hotel Management Ltd (GHM), The Chedi Hegra has officially opened its doors. Nestled within the ancient Nabataean site of Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, this luxury property marks a transformative moment in the Kingdom’s journey as a world-class tourist destination.

The hotel is operated by GHM, a luxury hotel management company, and developed by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), the authority responsible for protecting and promoting AlUla, a region rich in archaeological, historical and cultural significance.

“The Chedi Hegra will stand as a model for authentic luxury, blending modern hospitality with the timeless heritage of AlUla. This project embodies the vision of our Journey Through Time masterplan, which celebrates AlUla’s history and culture, offering travellers an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most awe-inspiring locations,” explains Axel Jarosch, Vice President of Hotels & Resorts at RCU.

A unique blend of heritage and luxury

With 35 bespoke guest rooms, The Chedi Hegra masterfully combines contemporary design with the historical significance of its surroundings. Each room has been meticulously crafted to harmonise with the desert landscape while preserving the integrity of the ancient site.

The hotel’s design integrates existing structures such as the Hegra railway station, showcasing a gleaming 1906 locomotive at the centre of the main restaurant. The train maintenance area, visible through a glass floor, adds a unique heritage exhibition for guests. Lime-based materials were used to restore gaps in the masonry, allowing the stone to breathe while conserving its historic charm.

Additionally, the original earthen mud-brick buildings on-site have been transformed into a luxurious spa and gym. This thoughtful preservation ensures that the essence of Hegra’s past remains alive within the guest experience.

A commitment to sustainability

Aligned with RCU’s Sustainability Charter, The Chedi Hegra demonstrates a light-touch tourism approach that minimises environmental impact. Local materials were prioritised throughout the development process, and the hotel has created 120 new jobs, further contributing to AlUla’s economic growth.

“We are confident this project will set a new benchmark for luxury experiences in AlUla,” Jarosch added.

Dining experiences rooted in history

The Chedi Hegra boasts three distinctive culinary venues, each offering a unique perspective on Hegra’s rich history and culture:

  1. Prima Classe: This fine-dining restaurant is housed in the former Hegra railway station, with the 1906 locomotive as its centrepiece. Guests enjoy exquisite meals alongside a heritage exhibition, blending gastronomy with history.
  2. Al Qala’ah: Located within the historic walls of Hegra Fort, this venue offers breathtaking views of the desert landscape in a more casual dining setting.
  3. Al Mawrid: This sunken water basin seating area provides unobstructed views of Hegra’s awe-inspiring scenery, creating a tranquil atmosphere for leisurely meals.

Immersive wellness

The Chedi Spa offers six treatment rooms, two hydrothermal rooms, and two post-treatment relaxation areas, ensuring a serene escape for guests. The fitness centre and a hydrotherapy pool, located in restored mud-brick villas, provide modern amenities while preserving the site’s authenticity.

Celebrating AlUla’s heritage

The Chedi Hegra immerses guests in AlUla’s unique cultural fabric from the moment they arrive. Welcome drinks inspired by local traditions, in-room amenities featuring local dates and nuts, and a dedicated Saudi Coffee House invite travellers to connect with the region’s rich history.

Curated guides highlight key attractions within the UNESCO Heritage Site, while beyond the hotel, guests can embark on Bedouin expeditions, explore wildlife reserves, and witness falconry displays, all designed to foster a deeper appreciation for AlUla’s heritage.

“We are delighted to welcome guests to The Chedi Hegra, a landmark destination that celebrates AlUla’s incredible history while providing an unparalleled luxury experience,” said Mahmoud Sakr, General Manager at The Chedi Hegra. “Our vision is to create a retreat where visitors can explore the wonders of Hegra, indulge in the finest hospitality, and connect with the soul of this extraordinary region.”

With its harmonious blend of history, luxury, and sustainability, The Chedi Hegra offers guests an unforgettable journey through time, surrounded by the unparalleled beauty of AlUla’s ancient landscapes.
