Makkah’s Hira Cultural District stands as a unique fusion of cultural exploration, historical immersion, and modern entertainment, attracting visitors from across the globe. Located beside the historically significant Mount Hira, the district spans an impressive 67,000 square metres, becoming a must-visit landmark for both residents and tourists.
Mount Hira itself holds profound religious importance as it is the location where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelations from Allah through the Angel Gabriel. This event marks the beginning of the Quranic revelations that continued over 23 years and forms the bedrock of Islamic faith. The cave at the summit of Mount Hira, where the Prophet spent many nights in meditation and prayer, remains a sought-after destination for those wishing to connect with this pivotal moment in Islamic history.
The Hira Cultural District provides visitors with an educational journey through its dedicated centre, which offers insights into the site’s historical and geographical significance, and an overview of the available services. At the heart of the district is the Revelation Exhibition, which details how various prophets received divine revelations. A special focus is placed on the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), exploring facets of his life and the profound impact of these messages.
Adjacent to this exhibition is the Holy Quran Museum, a modern facility utilising cutting-edge technology to display unique collections. The museum emphasises the universal significance and enduring legacy of the Quran, highlighting its remarkable preservation throughout history.
The development and management of the Hira Cultural District represent a successful collaboration among various governmental bodies. The Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, the Emirate of Makkah, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, the Holy Makkah Municipality, the Pilgrim Experience Programme, and the General Authority of Endowments jointly oversee and manage the district. This cooperation underscores the district’s importance as a cultural and educational hub intended to enhance the Hajj and Umrah experience, and enrich the cultural landscape of Makkah.
