Global Sustainability Research Centre announced

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council has announced the launch of a new global research centre, with support from the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The centre aims to be a “leading entity and a high-level reference body for research aimed at accelerating the travel and tourism sector’s transition to climate neutrality”.

The new research centre is set to become a vanguard in guiding the travel and tourism industry towards climate neutrality. While the industry has seen an exponential rise in multinational companies implementing sustainable strategies, the spotlight here is also on micro, small, and medium enterprises. These smaller businesses, which account for a whopping 80% of the sector, often lack the resources and knowledge to transition to more sustainable operations. This centre aims to bridge that gap by delivering best practices that serve all.

From delving deep into renewable energy alternatives to championing efficient resource management, the centre’s mandate is clear. It is poised to identify ways to trim down emissions across different scopes and will place a particular emphasis on reducing resource waste—be it food, water, or other essentials—all while safeguarding nature and uplifting local communities.

Given that the travel and tourism industry is responsible for over 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is imperative to take measures to reduce these emissions. Without firm action, carbon emissions in the sector are projected to increase to 20% by 2030.

Minister of Tourism Ahmed bin Aqeel Al-Khateeb emphasised that this initiative builds upon the decision to establish the Global Centre for Sustainable Tourism in Saudi Arabia, which was announced by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince during the Saudi Green Initiative in October 2021. He also highlighted the centre’s commitment to providing global solutions that empower small and medium enterprises, travel destinations, and travellers, equipping them with valuable resources to make informed decisions.
“Our goal is that the centre will be a leading global centre that provides indispensable tools and solutions to all stakeholders, with the support of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and the Ministry of Tourism,” said Al-Khateeb, adding, “Through these efforts, we aim to empower and support the travel and tourism sector to adopt environmental solutions and support prosperity.”
