Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national airline, inaugurated its maiden flight to AlUla International Airport on Saturday 3 February, marking the commencement of a direct service between Bahrain and AlUla. These flights will operate twice weekly through to 6 March, and subsequently from 10 April to 27 April, utilising the Gulf Air A320neo aircraft.
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) is intent on expanding air connectivity to various domestic and international destinations, with the aim of transforming AlUla into a major logistics hub in northwest Saudi Arabia.
Rami Almoallim, Vice President of Destination Marketing and Management Office at RCU, commented, “We are pleased to welcome new visitors on their journey to AlUla, which offers a cultural and tourism experience.”
He further remarked that Gulf Air’s selection of AlUla as a principal seasonal destination for this year evidences the historical site’s appeal to tourists. “This also helps our endeavors to facilitate access to AlUla as a destination via direct international flights from neighboring international aviation hubs,” he added.
AlUla International Airport has undergone several enhancements in recent years to improve its services. It joined the ranks of international airports in March 2021. The airport’s expanse has swelled to nearly 2.4 million square meters, with its flight deck now able to accommodate up to 15 aircraft simultaneously.
The development of aviation operations and airport infrastructure is in line with AlUla’s objective of attracting two million visitors annually by 2035, as part of a pioneering and sustainable tourism strategy.
Furthering this expansion, Saudi airlines have broadened their flight operations to AlUla International Airport, establishing links with Europe through flights from Paris and adding international routes from Dubai, Doha, and Cairo.
