King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), managed and operated by Riyadh Airports Company, has achieved remarkable milestones in 2024, underscoring its pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals. The airport set new benchmarks for passenger traffic, operational efficiency, and infrastructure development, solidifying its position as a key gateway to the Kingdom and the world.

Record-breaking passenger traffic and operational excellence

In 2024, King Khalid International Airport welcomed over 37 million passengers, marking a significant surge in traffic. The airport also recorded its busiest day on August 1, with more than 131,000 passengers passing through its terminals. Operational efficiency remained a cornerstone, as KKIA achieved an industry-leading 86% on-time departure rate—a testament to its strategic enhancements and focus on passenger satisfaction.

The year also saw a remarkable 269,000 flights connecting Riyadh to 113 domestic and international destinations, highlighting the airport’s growing global connectivity. June 13, 2024, was a particularly noteworthy day, with 903 flights successfully departing or arriving at the airport.

Ayman Abdulaziz AboAbah, CEO of Riyadh Airports Company, emphasised the significance of these achievements, stating, “These milestones reflect the remarkable growth trajectory of King Khalid International Airport. We are proud to support Riyadh’s and the Kingdom’s development aspirations, solidifying the airport as a vital driver of economic growth and a gateway to the world.”

Infrastructure expansion: international passenger terminal launch

Adding to the airport’s impressive performance, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), inaugurated the phased operation of International Passenger Terminal No. 1 on Thursday, January 2, 2025. This expansion project, part of the development of Terminals 1 and 2, significantly enhances KKIA’s capacity and passenger experience.

The new terminal will increase capacity from 3 million to 7 million passengers per year, bolstering Riyadh’s connectivity to international destinations. During a field tour of the terminal, Minister Al-Jasser highlighted the importance of this development: “This expansion contributes to increased airport capacity, enhances travel movement, supports economic and tourism growth, and improves the overall passenger experience. It aligns with the goals of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”

The terminal upgrade includes state-of-the-art infrastructure, expanded facilities, and enhanced operational services, providing a seamless experience for travellers.

A vision for the future of Saudi aviation

The phased launch of the new terminal complements the larger vision for Riyadh as outlined by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The unveiling of the master plan for King Salman International Airport represents a transformative shift for the Kingdom’s aviation sector. The plan aims to position Riyadh as a global hub, capable of hosting major international events while supporting modern transportation, tourism, and trade initiatives.

Dr. Ghazi Al-Rawi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Riyadh Airports Company, and Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of GACA, were among the key figures present at the launch. Their leadership underscores a shared commitment to advancing Saudi Arabia’s aviation infrastructure to meet the demands of a rapidly growing economy and increasing global connectivity.

Strategic enhancements driving growth

King Khalid International Airport has also made strides in enriching the passenger experience through a series of enhancements in 2024. These include:

  • The addition of 15 new airline partners, expanding connectivity to more destinations.
  • The inauguration of five new duty-free areas and 29 retail outlets, offering a diverse range of services, from pharmacies and relaxation lounges to cafes and restaurants.

These developments not only enhance the airport’s functionality but also align with Riyadh’s aspirations to become a premier international travel hub.

A gateway to global success

As King Khalid International Airport continues its upward trajectory, it plays a critical role in advancing the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. By combining record-breaking passenger traffic, operational efficiency, and transformative infrastructure projects, KKIA is positioning Riyadh as a leading global destination for business, tourism, and beyond.
