Portrait: Olivier Jacquet – a visionary hotelier inspired by Saudi Arabia’s transformative potential

For Olivier Jacquet, Saudi Arabia represents not just an exciting frontier in global hospitality but also a symbol of transformation and possibility. Having witnessed the Kingdom’s remarkable growth firsthand, Jacquet is captivated by its tourism sector’s rapid evolution. “Saudi Arabia’s tourism turnover reached over $37 billion by the end of 2023, growing 44% from the previous year. That’s exceptional,” he remarks, his admiration evident. For a man whose career has been defined by growth and innovation, it’s clear that Saudi Arabia has become a focal point for his ambitions.

Jacquet’s connection to the Kingdom is rooted in his early career, when he first travelled through Saudi Arabia more than two decades ago. “Back then, the country was very different from what it is today. The transformation I’ve seen is extraordinary,” he says. His exposure to Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East has shaped his outlook, giving him a deep understanding of the region’s unique potential and challenges. Now, with the Kingdom positioning itself as a global tourism destination under Vision 2030, Jacquet sees an opportunity to bring his expertise to a place that resonates with his philosophy of innovation and growth.

A journey through hospitality

Jacquet’s career in hospitality began more than 25 years ago in Paris, where he worked as a bell-boy at a luxury hotel. “I’m a typical example of meritocracy in the hotel industry,” he says, reflecting on how he climbed the ranks from operational roles at prestigious establishments like Hôtel Westminster, Le Meurice, and the Royal Monceau to leadership positions. His tenure in Paris laid the foundation for his understanding of luxury, service, and the importance of cultural nuance in hospitality.

He soon moved into commercial roles, becoming Sales Manager for France and the United States at the Hôtel Concorde Opéra, part of the Taittinger Group. Over the years, he transitioned to Deputy Director of Sales at Hôtel Concorde La Fayette and Director of Sales and Marketing at Hôtel Concorde Opéra, where he refined his ability to negotiate and implement strategic initiatives.

In 2008, Jacquet joined Louvre Hotels Group, where he oversaw an expansive portfolio of 900 hotels as Vice President of Global Sales and later Vice President of Operations. His time at Louvre Hotels was marked by exponential growth—under his leadership, the group expanded to 1,300 hotels within five and a half years, acquired the Golden Tulip group, and was integrated into Jin Jiang International Holdings. “We were pioneers in implementing CRM tools and managing tenders at a time when it was considered avant-garde,” he recalls. This period taught him the power of vision and adaptability in achieving rapid growth.

Bridging cultures at Groupe Pichet

By 2018, Jacquet had shifted his focus to Groupe Pichet, one of France’s leading real estate groups. As Director General of the hotel division, he was tasked with creating a high-end hotel segment while expanding the All Suites brand of aparthotels and student residences. “When I started, there were 15 sites in operation. Over the years, we developed 17 more,” he explains. Olivier Jacquet’s work at Pichet was defined by his ability to integrate hospitality with broader ecosystems, including retail and dining.

One of the standout projects during this time was the development of a Radisson hotel in northern France, which featured one of the largest spas in the country. “The aim was to create destinations that offered something beyond accommodation—a holistic experience that appealed to a wide range of guests,” Jacquet explains. His work exemplified his belief in combining functionality with creativity.

The Mondrian Bordeaux: a career highlight

Among Olivier Jacquet’s most inspiring achievements is the Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes, a collaboration with renowned designer Philippe Starck. “Working on the Mondrian Bordeaux was one of the most inspiring experiences of my career,” he says. The hotel, located in a historic castle in Bordeaux, is a seamless blend of heritage and modernity. “It’s not just a hotel; it’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and collaboration.”

The project is also a reflection of Jacquet’s ability to bring together diverse influences. “The Mondrian Bordeaux tells a story of East meeting West,” he explains. “From Bordeaux, we brought the roots, terroir, and craftsmanship. From Japan, we introduced an unexpected layer of tradition and innovation. It’s not about blending the two but letting them complement each other in a way that feels natural and meaningful.”

With its stunning spa, open-air terrace, and 500 square metres of restaurant space featuring the innovative cuisine of Morimoto, the Mondrian Bordeaux has become an iconic destination. For Jacquet, it exemplifies what can be achieved when visionaries come together. “This project isn’t just about possibility; it’s about necessity. It’s a testament to what happens when talent and vision align,” he says.

Saudi Arabia: a new frontier

As Olivier Jacquet reflects on his career, his thoughts return to Saudi Arabia—a destination he believes is brimming with untapped potential. “The Kingdom’s tourism sector has come such a long way, but there’s still so much more to be done,” he notes. He is particularly intrigued by the opportunity to work on projects that combine international standards with local flavours. “Saudi Arabia has an incredible opportunity to create independent establishments with atypical styles. These will stand out and draw visitors looking for something unique.”

Jacquet is also aware of the challenges. “Europe accounts for just 2.5% of Saudi Arabia’s tourism market. That’s a perception issue, not a reflection of what the Kingdom has to offer,” he says. However, he believes that with continued investment in infrastructure, promotion, and cultural storytelling, Saudi Arabia can change global perceptions. “Every traveller who visits becomes an ambassador. It takes time, but it’s happening.”

Looking ahead, Jacquet is eager to bring his expertise to the Kingdom. “What I’d like is to work with a family office or state-run organisation to develop bespoke concepts that reflect Saudi Arabia’s heritage while meeting the highest international standards,” he says. With a career defined by innovation and growth, Olivier Jacquet is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Saudi Arabia’s hospitality landscape—a journey that mirrors the Kingdom’s own bold ambitions.
