Saudi Arabia has marked another Green Initiative Day this week, bringing its vision of a more sustainable future into sharper focus. The commemoration stands as a beacon of the country’s ecological commitment, embodied by the Saudi Green Initiative, which boldly envisions the planting of 10 billion trees across its vast landscapes.
The journey began three years ago, with the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on March 27, 2021.
This monumental endeavour aims to breathe life into the desert, combating desertification, and revitalising arid lands. As these green efforts unfurl, they simultaneously lay the groundwork for an emerging sector poised to redefine the Kingdom’s global image: ecotourism.

Ecotourism, by its UN-defined essence, converges conservation with local culture and education, fostering tourism that is both nature-based and nurturing. Saudi Arabia’s vast initiatives mirror this ethos, turning towards sustainable tourism that conserves and celebrates its natural and socio-cultural environment. By generating economic benefits for local communities and increasing conservation awareness, the Kingdom is nurturing a tourism model that supports its broader sustainability goals.
The comprehensive efforts span various projects with notable milestones:
- The Red Sea Project is pioneering luxury ecotourism, encompassing an archipelago of over 90 untouched islands and the stunning Tabuk province coastline. This giga-project champions sustainability, aiming for 100% renewable energy use and zero waste. It’s set to become a Dark Sky Reserve, allowing visitors to gaze upon the night skies with the same wonder as the travelers and caravans of old.
- Green Riyadh seeks to transform the capital’s green space from the ground up. With a goal to plant 7.5 million trees, the project anticipates an enhanced urban environment that lowers temperatures, improves air quality, and encourages outdoor activities. This green infrastructure not only aims to elevate Riyadh’s liveability but also positions it as a model for sustainable urban tourism.
- The NEOM Project, a bold initiative in the Tabuk region, represents the zenith of innovation in smart city planning. Its vision of a new future includes tourism among its foundational pillars, with a commitment to be a living lab for sustainability. It’s expected to become a magnet for global travelers interested in a unique blend of high-tech and nature-based experiences.
Furthermore, specific initiatives to enhance Saudi Arabia’s natural beauty and biodiversity are underway, from forest management and rangeland preservation efforts that aim to restore ecological balance to the Kingdom’s natural environments, to the development of 50 national parks which will serve as havens for biodiversity and gateways to nature for visitors and residents alike.

The development of these national parks also highlights a commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure and a platform for local economies to flourish through sustainable tourism. Notably, plans to cultivate seven million trees across royal reserves bolster the drive towards carbon sequestration and showcase the Kingdom’s natural splendour to the eco-conscious traveller.
Ecotourism in Saudi Arabia is burgeoning against the backdrop of these projects. Vision 2030’s framework leverages the country’s unique landscapes—from the sweeping deserts to the Red Sea’s marine life-rich waters—transforming Saudi Arabia into an ecotourism destination of global importance.
Masarat Adventure Club is one such embodiment of Saudi’s green tourism vision, offering immersive experiences that are environmentally respectful and culturally enriching. From snorkeling in coral-rich waters to hiking in the rejuvenating expanses of greenery sprouting across the nation, they represent the dynamic future of tourism in Saudi Arabia—a future that harmonizes luxury, sustainability, and adventure for the discerning global traveller.

As Saudi Arabia forges ahead with its green initiatives, the symbiosis between sustainable development and tourism is clear. The country’s investment in ecotourism not only contributes to the protection and preservation of its natural environment but also opens up a world of opportunity for travellers seeking destinations where luxury and conservation go hand in hand. The Green Initiative Day thus not only marks progress in ecological endeavors but also heralds the rise of a new, green chapter in Saudi Arabia’s storied heritage.
