The highly anticipated Riyadh Metro, one of the world’s largest and most advanced urban transit systems, is set to open its doors to the public on 1 December 2024. This milestone marks the start of a new era for transportation in the Kingdom’s capital, promising transformative changes in urban mobility and aligning with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals of economic diversification, enhanced quality of life, and sustainability.
A phased launch of six state-of-the-art lines
The Riyadh Metro, spanning 176 kilometres with 85 stations, will see its six lines open in a staggered rollout. The initial phase begins with the inauguration of Line 1 (Blue Line), Line 4 (Yellow Line), and Line 6 (Purple Line) on 1 December. On 15 December, Line 2 (Red Line) and Line 5 (Green Line) will follow. Finally, on 5 January 2025, Line 3 (Orange Line) will complete the system, marking the full operational status of the network.
Travellers can plan their journeys and purchase tickets via the user-friendly Darb app, available on mobile platforms. Information is also accessible through a dedicated call centre and the Riyadh Metro’s website and social media channels.
The metro’s transformative impact
Designed to accommodate Riyadh’s rapidly growing population, the Riyadh Metro is expected to initially serve 1.1 million passengers daily, with plans to increase capacity to 3.6 million. By reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality, the project plays a key role in modernizing Riyadh’s urban infrastructure.
The metro complements a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, ensuring comprehensive connectivity across the city. It employs next-generation Level 4 automation, offering driverless operations for enhanced safety and efficiency.
Vision 2030 in action
The Riyadh Metro underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to becoming a global leader in infrastructure and innovation. As highlighted by Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics, the project is a significant step forward in achieving the Kingdom’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to position Riyadh as a global city and improve quality of life for its residents.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman inaugurated the project on 27 November, calling it a “historic milestone.” The metro system embodies the visionary leadership that has propelled Saudi Arabia’s transformation into a hub of progress and innovation.
International collaboration
The project benefited from international expertise, with Egis, as part of the Riyadh Metro Transit Consultants (RMTC) consortium, playing a critical role in managing the design and construction of Lines 1, 2, and 3. Egis also worked on preliminary studies and is continuing its involvement with the design of the future Line 7 and the Red Line extension.
Egis has incorporated eco-design principles, achieving LEED Gold certification for key stations like King Abdullah Financial District and Qasr Al Hokm. The firm has advanced gender inclusion, with women assuming roles such as station masters and operational supervisors, and has developed Saudi expertise in specialized fields like platform screen door technology.
Meanwhile, RATP Dev operates the network’s Blue and Red lines (lines 1 and 2), through its joint venture CAMCO, alongside Saudi company SAPTCO. RATP Dev is also proud to be managing the bus network via PTC, its joint venture with SAPTCO, ensuring seamless integration and efficient service across Riyadh’s public transport system.

By reducing reliance on private vehicles, the Riyadh Metro is expected to significantly lower carbon emissions and enhance air quality in the city. Its sustainable infrastructure, which includes advanced cooling systems and adherence to Fire and Life Safety standards, ensures a safe and comfortable experience for passengers.
