Nestled in the enchanting Arabian desert, a new luxury destination emerges. The Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea, is not just a resort—it’s a testament to innovation, adventure, and rich heritage. And it’s the very first resort to open as part of the ambitious Red Sea Project.
Drawing inspiration from its unique surroundings, this establishment promises an experience unlike any other. Nestled in the vast expanse of the desert, it offers guests an extraordinary journey of discovery, cultural enrichment, and wellness.
Fredrik Blomqvist, the General Manager of the resort, emphasized their commitment to merging cultural preservation with innovative tourism. “This part of the world holds much intrigue for visitors and immense potential for regenerative tourism. We are determined to showcase the unique beauty and rich culture of this region while championing sustainable tourism practices,” he shared.
This commitment to sustainability isn’t just talk. With 36 guest rooms and 40 pool villas, the design maximises the picturesque views of the dunes and wadi. British architectural firm Foster + Partners, known for their eco-friendly designs, has left their distinctive mark on the resort. Sustainability is more than a buzzword for Six Senses; it’s a practice embedded in their operations. As a step towards this, the resort aims to become the first LEED Platinum resort in Saudi Arabia.
But the real story here is in the details. Furnishings inspired by traditional Bedouin dresses, workshops at the Earth Lab that breathe life into conservation concepts, and a culinary journey guided by the philosophy of Eat With Six Senses. With every facet, the resort promises an authentic and immersive experience.
In an exclusive interview with Neil Jacobs, the group CEO of Six Senses, he shared his insights and excitement about this ambitious project. “We’re extremely excited about what’s transpiring in the kingdom. While we’re part of the Red Sea development, our distinction lies in our unique positioning—away from the water and deep into the enchanting desert landscape,” Jacobs enthused.
“The architecture truly mirrors the environment it resides in. It’s contemporary, yet deeply rooted in the region’s heritage. It’s a new vocabulary of desert luxury”
He went on to detail the resort’s distinctive design. “The architecture truly mirrors the environment it resides in. It’s contemporary, yet deeply rooted in the region’s heritage. It’s a new vocabulary of desert luxury,” he stated.
Sustainability, Jacobs elaborated, is more than just an industry catchphrase for Six Senses. It’s a commitment. “From utilizing alternative energy sources, like our solar farm, to focusing on local community engagement, we prioritize sustainability in every aspect of our operations,” he asserted. This ethos is evident in everything, from their no-plastic-bottle policy to allocating a portion of their revenue for sustainable activities outside the hotel.
A director of sustainability is present in each of the group’s hotels, ensuring Six Senses’ commitment to the environment and community is not just upheld but celebrated. Jacobs emphasises the importance of transparency in their sustainable endeavours: “Through our Earth Lab, guests can witness our sustainable practices firsthand—be it recycling, repurposing, or energy conservation. We believe in setting an example, not just in luxury but in conscious living.”
The Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea, is more than just a resort. It is a testament to sustainability, and a beacon of cultural preservation. As the resort opens its doors, it promises not just luxury, but a journey into the heart of Saudi Arabia’s rich history and tradition. Whether for an adventure-seeker, a wellness enthusiast, or a history buff, this new destination promises an experience that’s both enriching and unforgettable.
