High-level meeting boosts US-Arab tourism prospects

The Arab Tourism Organization (ATO) is looking to expand its collaboration with the United States, following a key meeting between Dr Bandar bin Fahd Al-Fehaid, President of ATO, and US Consul General Dao Le. The meeting, held at the ATO’s headquarters in Jeddah, focused on ways to strengthen cooperation in various areas of tourism, including knowledge exchange, best practices, and investment opportunities between the US and the Arab world.

The Arab Tourism Organization (ATO) is a specialised body under the Arab League that focuses on promoting and developing the tourism sector across the Arab world. It was established to enhance cooperation among Arab countries and coordinate efforts to maximize the region’s tourism potential, both domestically and internationally.

In recent years, the ATO has been instrumental in supporting Arab countries, especially Saudi Arabia, in attracting international tourists. It has worked closely with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative to develop the country’s tourism infrastructure, enhance its global image, and attract significant tourism investments.

Dr Al-Fehaid highlighted that the meeting was not just about strengthening ties but also about creating a framework to attract U.S. investments into the tourism infrastructure in Arab nations. These investments are expected to further enhance the quality of services, promote cultural exchange, and improve the overall global appeal of Arab tourist destinations.

Wîth ten years’ experience in the Gulf (United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman), the US Consul General in Jeddah also represents the United States to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

During the discussions, the Consul General commended the impressive growth in the tourism industry, particularly in Saudi Arabia, which has attracted over 100 million tourists. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the region and reflects the Kingdom’s efforts in boosting its tourism sector as part of Saudi Vision 2030. The consul expressed his admiration for the strategic advancements being made and acknowledged the potential for deeper U.S.-Arab tourism collaboration, particularly as Saudi Arabia continues to position itself as a global tourism hub.

Saudi Arabia’s tourism growth and Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia has been making tremendous strides in tourism, fueled by its Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the economy away from oil dependence. The Kingdom aims to increase tourism’s contribution to GDP by developing world-class infrastructure, hosting international events, and promoting both heritage and natural tourism. The country has become an attractive destination for foreign investors, with key projects like the Red Sea Project, NEOM, and Diriyah Gate leading the way in luxury, cultural, and eco-tourism.

The meeting between ATO and US representatives also comes at a time when the global tourism industry is recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both sides discussed the potential for US-Arab partnerships to leverage this recovery and establish sustainable tourism practices that benefit both regions. Joint ventures in tourism could open doors for more cultural exchanges and mutual benefits for both tourists and tourism stakeholders.

US involvement in Arab tourism

While the US has always been a significant partner in international tourism, this new push by the ATO to deepen relations could bring more American tourists to Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia. Moreover, US-based companies involved in tourism, technology, and hospitality could also benefit from investment opportunities and partnerships with Arab nations looking to develop their tourism offerings.

The latest moves towards collaboration could lead to the development of more joint ventures, tourism summits, and initiatives to promote shared experiences between Arab and American tourists, potentially unlocking new tourism markets for both regions.
