Saudi Tourism Ministry backs inaugural WTM Spotlight Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Tourism has been confirmed as Strategic Partner of the inaugural WTM Spotlight Riyadh, giving the new travel trade event significant institutional backing as the Kingdom moves into the next phase of its tourism development.

Taking place from 8 to 10 September 2026 at the Riyadh Front Exhibition & Conference Center, the event has been created around a clear proposition: connecting the world to Saudi Arabia—and Saudi Arabia to the world.

That two-way ambition is important. Saudi Arabia is no longer positioning itself solely as an emerging destination seeking international visitors. It is also a major source market, an increasingly influential tourism investor and a potential business partner for destinations, hospitality groups, airlines, technology companies and tourism operators worldwide.

The partnership with the Ministry of Tourism therefore gives WTM Spotlight Riyadh a role extending beyond that of a conventional exhibition. It is intended to become a meeting point between Saudi tourism stakeholders and the international travel industry, bringing together decision-makers capable of turning the Kingdom’s tourism ambitions into commercial partnerships.

A marketplace for a rapidly changing sector

The inaugural event will welcome destinations, tourism authorities, hospitality companies, airlines, travel technology businesses, investors, buyers and other industry leaders.

Its B2B2C format will cover a broad section of the tourism ecosystem, supporting the development of inbound travel while also providing international businesses with access to Saudi Arabia’s valuable outbound market.

For overseas companies, the opportunity lies not only in selling holidays to Saudi travellers. It encompasses hotel development, destination management, aviation, transport, digital services, entertainment, professional training, investment and the supply of expertise to an industry being developed at exceptional speed.

Saudi stakeholders, meanwhile, will have direct access to international distribution networks, buyers, brands and specialist knowledge.

WTM Spotlight Riyadh has consequently been designed as both a showcase and a working commercial platform. Its long-term relevance will ultimately depend on its ability to produce meaningful meetings, investment discussions and lasting partnerships rather than simply attracting large visitor numbers.

Danielle Curtis, Regional Portfolio Director, UAE, at RX, described the Ministry’s involvement as “a defining moment” for the inaugural event.

“Our strategic partnership with the Ministry of Tourism is a defining moment for the inaugural WTM Spotlight Riyadh and reflects the Kingdom’s ambition to play an even greater role in shaping the future of global tourism,” she said.

“We are proud to be working alongside the Ministry to create an event that brings together decision-makers from across the international travel industry and supports Saudi Arabia’s long-term tourism ambitions.”

Supporting the next stage of Vision 2030

Tourism has become one of the central pillars of Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification under Vision 2030. The sector is expected to contribute 10% of GDP by the end of the decade, while the Kingdom is targeting 150 million domestic and international visits annually.

Achieving those ambitions requires considerably more than the construction of hotels and resorts. It depends on air connectivity, international distribution, destination awareness, workforce development, technology, investment and the ability to convert curiosity about Saudi Arabia into bookable tourism products.

It also requires deeper engagement with the international travel trade.

WTM Spotlight Riyadh enters the market at precisely this point in the Kingdom’s development. Major destinations and projects are moving from planning and construction into active operation, creating a need for greater international visibility and stronger commercial links.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia’s tourism offer is becoming increasingly diverse. Religious travel remains fundamental, but it is now complemented by heritage and cultural tourism, Red Sea resorts, wellness, nature, adventure, sport, entertainment and major international events.

This expanding portfolio requires different distribution channels and different forms of expertise. Luxury travel advisers, tour operators, meeting and events specialists, airline partners and online platforms will all play a part in helping the Kingdom reach distinct international audiences.

“WTM Spotlight Riyadh has been designed to create meaningful business connections, encourage the exchange of ideas and provide international travel professionals with direct access to one of the world’s most exciting tourism markets,” Curtis added.

“Together with the Ministry, we are building an event that reflects the ambition and scale of Saudi Arabia’s tourism transformation.”

Saudi Arabia as an outbound market

While much of the international attention surrounding Vision 2030 has focused on bringing visitors into Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s outbound market is equally relevant to the global tourism industry.

Saudi travellers are sought after by destinations and hospitality businesses because of their propensity for longer stays, family travel and premium expenditure. Improved air connectivity and the continued expansion of Saudi carriers are making this market accessible to a growing range of international destinations.

WTM Spotlight Riyadh will therefore offer foreign tourism boards, hotels and travel companies an opportunity to develop relationships with Saudi buyers and better understand the preferences of the Kingdom’s travellers.

This dual focus distinguishes the event from a platform concerned exclusively with Saudi inbound tourism. It creates a marketplace in which Saudi Arabia can present its destinations to the world while international destinations compete for the attention of Saudi consumers and distribution partners.

A new addition to the WTM portfolio

WTM Spotlight Riyadh joins an international portfolio of travel industry events operated by RX, including WTM London, Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, WTM Latin America, WTM Africa and the forthcoming WTM Spotlight India.

The strength of that established network could be particularly valuable to the Riyadh event. It provides access to international exhibitors, tourism authorities, hosted buyers and senior industry figures already familiar with the WTM format.

However, the Riyadh edition is being positioned around the specific needs of the Saudi market rather than as a simple regional copy of an existing exhibition.

Its success will be measured by how effectively it connects international expertise and capital with Saudi projects—and how successfully it helps Saudi tourism businesses enter wider international markets.

The Ministry of Tourism’s decision to become Strategic Partner sends an important signal to the industry. It indicates that WTM Spotlight Riyadh is being viewed as part of the infrastructure needed to support tourism growth, investment and international cooperation under Vision 2030.

Saudi Arabia has already demonstrated that it can attract global attention through ambitious developments, cultural initiatives and major events. The next challenge is to translate that attention into sustainable demand, commercially viable tourism products and long-term international partnerships.

WTM Spotlight Riyadh has been created to help bridge that gap. Its inaugural edition will provide the first indication of how effectively it can bring the Kingdom’s tourism ambitions and the global travel industry together.
